Magikarp card – the fish that will become Gyarados
This Japanese Magikarp card 013/078 (コイキング / Magikarp) comes from sv1S Scarlet ex (2023), the first set of the Scarlet & Violet era, released in the West in Scarlet & Violet (044/198). Kiyotaka Oshiyama, an animation director, draws it caught in a swirl of rushing water, at the foot of a striped pillar. The Pokédex judges it “utterly pathetic”: it very rarely jumps high, and never more than two metres.
Card details
- Basic Pokémon, Water type, 30 HP, Lightning weakness ×2
- Attack: flip a coin, if heads, 10 damage to one of your opponent’s Pokémon (don’t apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokémon)
- Rarity C, number 013/078, illustration by Kiyotaka Oshiyama, ©2023
Its evolution is in the shop: holo Gyarados. Two other Magikarp are available: the Triplet Beat Magikarp and the Pokémon Card 151 Magikarp. From the same Scarlet ex set, Wugtrio and Lucario are in the shop.
