Hopkins amiibo card no. 02 – Welcome amiibo Series
Hopkins (Grignote in French, プースケ in Japan) is a bright blue rabbit with dark freckles and yellow inner ears. Lazy by nature, he mostly talks about food and naps, and is warm towards the player from the outset. A detail that attentive players notice: at the back of his head he has what looks like an inflation valve, like a swim ring.
A Welcome amiibo series card, the rarest in the collection
This card does not belong to series 1 to 5 but to the Welcome amiibo series, 50 cards released at the end of 2016 to accompany the update of the same name on Nintendo 3DS. Their format is different: instead of the usual portrait, it is the character’s camper van that is illustrated, with its furnishings. The 50 villagers of this series were all absent from New Leaf: they return from the GameCube games and from the Japanese edition Doubutsu no Mori e+. Single print run, never reprinted since.
A gamer’s camper van
Hopkins’ van is a video-game sanctuary: a television, a Wii U console, a New Nintendo 3DS XL, a giant Game Boy and even a Disk Writer kiosk, the kind of kiosks that let you rewrite Famicom Disk System disks. The game has fun with this: according to his profile, Hopkins does not go camping just to stay in his van playing – he also drinks orange juice there.
Japanese version, compatible with your Switch
Only the name printed on the front is in Japanese. As amiibo are not region-locked, the card scans on every Switch console, including French ones, and the character appears in the game under the French name, Grignote. It works with Animal Crossing: New Horizons, where it lets you invite Hopkins to the campsite and then to your island, as well as with New Leaf – Welcome amiibo, where it brings the camper van and its exclusive furniture.
